About the Serenity Room
- Located in McWherter Library, 3rd Floor, Room 308.
- Inclusive space intended for for individual meditation, yoga, spiritual practice, or quiet reflection.
- Equipped with yoga mats, meditation cushions, rugs, LED candles, and supplies for a variety of meditation practices. Users are encouraged to bring their own meditation and prayer related items as well.
- Funded by a CoRS grant awarded to the International Faculty and Staff Association (IFSA).
Serenity Room Rules
- Only currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff may reserve the space.
- This space is intended for use by one person at a time.
- Reserving the space for study sessions, socializing, meetings, or other academic activities unrelated to meditation, individual yoga practice, or spiritual practice is not allowed.
- The consumption of food or beverages is prohibited.
- The use of open flames, candles, incense, or scented products is prohibited.
- Once the room is reserved online, the key must be checked out at the Circulation Desk and returned 30 minutes before the library closes.
- The room may be reserved for 1 hour per day and up to 30 days in advance.
- Continuous use beyond 1 hour requires coordination through library staff to ensure equitable access.
- Staff reserve the right to remove any item or individual misusing the space or compromising safety or property of the library.
- Any damage or safety hazard must be reported immediately to library staff.
Conduct & Courtesy
- The Serenity Room is in a Quiet Zone. All activities done within the room should be non-disruptive and respectful of the purpose of the space.
- Remove shoes upon entering and place them on the designated shoe tray.
- Clean and return mats, rugs, and supplies to their original locations after use.
- Restore furniture configuration if altered.
- Remove personal items and religious symbols after each session.
- Room supplies are available for shared use.
Library staff will monitor usage to ensure equitable access and compliance with policy. Questions about permissible use and reservations should be directed to the Circulation Department at lib_circ@memphis.edu.
