MEMFLIX: "Ouvrir la Voix / Speak Up" Film Viewing & Panel Discussion
In honor of this year’s Memphis Reads book, join us for three viewings of films portraying themes discussed in Thick, and Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom, followed by a discussion. The Thick, and Other Essays ebook is freely available to UofM students, faculty and staff through the University Libraries. To read Thick, visit https://bit.ly/THICKebook.
The final viewing of the series will be of Ouvrir la Voix, or Speak Up, on Tuesday, October 12 at 6 p.m. in the Memphis Public Library, Room TBA. Speak Up is a subtitled documentary about the experience of black women in France, which explores the intersections of discrimination, art and blackness. After the viewing, a panel will discuss the documentary and how it relates to Thick, and Other Essays. The event will be in-person (masks required) and is sponsored by the Memphis Public Library.
